Issues and Analysis from Developing Countries and Countries with Economies in Transition

As climate change negotiations advance, and greater consideration is given to the structure of the second commitment period, it is becoming increasingly obvious that there will need to be greater North-South cooperation on climate change. From the perspective of developing countries, international negotiations have not adequately addressed their priorities for sustainable development, support for adaptation activities, aid assistance and technology transfer.

Successfully reframing the global climate change debate as deriving from and complementing development priorities requires that global collaboration be approached on multiple levels and from various perspectives. Greater effort needs to go into generating ideas from within developing countries and sharing them with the international community. To that end, the Climate Compendium has offered research institutes from developing countries and countries with economies in transition the opportunity to produce issue papers on topics related to their regions and research.

This new section of the Climate Compendium, "Developing Perspectives on Climate Change: Issues and Analysis from Developing Countries and Countries with Economies in Transition," provides in-depth policy analysis and research on topics of concern to Climate Change Knowledge Network members and guest contributors. These papers are intended to further broaden climate change discussions, to involve a wider audience interested in considering and promoting emerging ideas from areas already feeling the impacts of climate change or facing critical policy decisions related to mitigation and adaptation.

As of May 2003, seven issue papers have been commissioned on a variety of topics. Organizations contributing papers represent Eastern Europe, Africa, South America and Asia. Please read these papers and distribute them to your colleagues and contacts. Each paper is introduced by an executive summary and is available for download in PDF format.
